What are the causes of Shin Splints?
Shin Splints can be caused by a variety of factors. These include:

• A sudden increase in training regime

• Excessive uphill running

• Running on hard terrain

• A sudden change in running terrain

• Tight Achilles and/or calf muscles, with weak shin muscles

• Poor running shoes

• Poor running style

• Flat feet

• Poor posture

The purpose of the muscle in the shin is to raise the toes off the ground. With many of the factors above, the muscles in the front of the shin can be stretched from repetitive ground contact by the feet. The shin muscles contract heavily which can result in muscle soreness or even injury to muscles, tendons or connective tissues in the lower leg.

Flat feet can also cause pain in the muscles due to overstretching and weakness, resulting in shin pain.
