What are Shin Splints?

The term shin splints is a generalised term for the symptom of pain over the front of the tibia (lower frontal leg, between knee and ankle).

It can be associated with a number of conditions. One of the most common conditions regularly labelled as shin splints is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome .

This syndrome is characterised by irritation of the connective tissue that attaches the muscles to the bones of the lower leg. This results in a razor sharp pain down the front of the leg, along the inside of the tibia or shin bone. Shin splints can occur anywhere along the lower leg from the knee to the ankle.
