How to Treat a Cold or Cough With Natural Remedies
Step 1
Ginger Tea
Cut up about a half of a ginger root into one inch pieces. Place in a saucepan with enough water to make two cups. Simmer until the tea is the desired strength. Drink with a little honey and lemon. This will help with laryngitis, as well as chest congestion. It really worked for my husband when he lost his voice. The next day he was talking again.
Step 2
Honey and Lemon Cough Syrup
Simply mix a teaspoon of lemon juice with honey to make a paste. Add a tiny amount of ginger powder, turmeric, or cayenne pepper. Take one teaspoon. Repeat as needed.
Step 3
Sip tea.
When I have a sore throat, it seems that a hot cup of tea is the best. Add honey and lemon to a hot cup of green or black tea. Stay away from milk though.
Step 4
Vitamin C
As soon as you begin feeling sick, start taking vitamin c. Take 1,000 mg upon feeling any symptoms with a full glass of water. Repeat with a second 1,000 mg vitamin c tablet in 2 hrs. You should begin to feel better, but if not, try a third in 2 more hrs. This will probably stop the cold in it's tracks. BE SURE TO TAKE WITH FULL GLASSES OF WATER. If you don't, you might end up really sick with diarrhea, and that's worse than a cold. The reason is that vitamin c is water soluble and will flush out of your system, but if you don't drink enough fluid it will build up and become toxic in your body. Take only enough that you need. Gauge it by when you notice symptoms subsiding. This remedy works for me all the time. I hardly ever end up with a cold, even when the whole house is sick, and I have 4 kids! Keep vitamin c in stock so you'll have it AS SOON as you start to feel symptoms.
